What type of trash can I put on the curbside for pickup?
The Streets Department rules for Residential Trash & Recycling are at https://www.phila.gov/departments/department-of-streets/about/rules-and-regulations/residential-trash-and-recycling-rules/
  • Trash must be legal household waste. Each container/bag can weigh no more than 40 lbs. Each trash can cannot exceed 32 gallons. The total weight should not exceed 240 lbs.
  • No construction debris, house/apartment cleanouts (such as when moving out), bulk items, bricks, carpets, etc.
For more information on PECO's Appliance Recycling Program, go to https://www.peco.com/WaysToSave/ForYourHome/Pages/Recycling.aspx, and PECO will pick up your working fridge or freezer for free and give you $75. Go to the site for details.

Cardboard boxes or paper bags may never be used as containers for trash or recycling, regardless of who collects them. An un-broken down box placed on the sidewalk will not be collected. Do not use boxes to put trash or recycling in. Boxes should be broken down and tied up with string. Further Information:
What WILL Be Collected:
  • Trash must be set out at the curb or edge of the driveway in a proper container and manner.

You Should Know:
Single-family households are allowed a maximum of four (4) 32-gallon
containers (trash cans) or eight (8) 30-32 gallon bags of trash each week.

Apartment buildings (can be a mix of residential and commercial, with no more than 6 total units) are allowed a maximum of 6 32-gallon containers.
  • Toilets can be disposed of curbside. They must be clean and clear of any water.
  • Household Furniture - must be whole, not broken down, and with no metal framing (sofa beds and easy chairs usually have metal framing and are not accepted, up to two items per week,
  • Mattresses and Box Springs will be collected and must be fully contained in a sealed, plastic bag. Items may be set out on your regular trash day. Mattress bags are available at any local home improvement, hardware store, and online. Please note that Mattresses and Box Springs taken to the Sanitation Convenience Centers are not required to have mattress covers.
  • Wood Scraps or Tree Limbs and other loose items must be securely tied into bundles no more than four feet long and two feet thick.
  • Glass and Mirrors should be put out whole if possible. If it's already broken, it should be put in a closed box that fits entirely into the trashcan.
What WILL NOT Be Collected:
  • Appliances such as stoves, washing machines, microwaves, refrigerators, hot water heaters, and tires are considered bulk items and are no longer picked up by the Streets Department. They need to be dropped of at the Sanitation Convenience Centers.
  • Grass must be collected by private landscaping/collection companies for recycling. This service is not offered by the Streets Department.
  • Televisions and Computer Equipment will not be collected curbside by City crews. These items can be dropped off at the Sanitation Convenience Centers ONLY and are no longer accepted at HHWaste Events because the centers will accept them every day.
  • Construction Debris (doors, carpets, cabinets, concrete, bags of bricks, stones, rocks, gravel, earth, wood, metal, ceramics, drywall, and cinder or concrete block) will not be picked up as bulk by the Sanitation Division or accepted at Sanitation Convenience Centers; contractors are responsible for removing their own debris.
